Design Museum Academy Children's Workshop
Design Camp: Architecture and Worldbuilding for 8 to 11 year olds
Inspired by the settings of Tim Burton’s films and exploring architectural designs from across the world, children will create their own architectural models and scenery for a character.
What to expect
In this architectural design and model-making workshop, participants will explore storytelling and character creation to design their own fantastical scenery.
During a short visit to The World of Tim Burton, participants will get inspiration from the director’s creative process and worldbuilding. They will then explore how architecture can set the mood and tell stories, and learn about architects from across the world who have created astonishing buildings.
The children will work on their imagined worlds based on exploratory case studies, discussions with others, and drawings on paper. They will design a place or world for their character to inhabit and transform their designs into 3D models in paper, cardboard and other materials. Whether gothic or fantastical, they will design and make something unexpected to take home.

Please note:
This workshop includes a short visit to our exhibition, The World of Tim Burton
Capacity is limited, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment
All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but participants will need to bring a packed lunch
This workshop is suitable for ages 8–11. All participants must be dropped off and picked up by an adult. Find out more information in the Booking section below
Facilitator
Wilson Yau
Yau is an artist and educator who specialises in teaching architectural drawing and history and has an MA in Design and Art in Education. For over 15 years, he has led creative workshops at other leading museums and at schools and community groups, including RIBA and the Zaha Hadid Foundation. Yau uses drawing to explore the urban environment and believes drawing is a powerful tool in visual literacy and wellbeing. More about Yau
