Volunteer at the museum
Volunteers are an integral part of the museum team. They work alongside staff, but in different roles, and contribute both to the development of museum activity as well as day-to-day operations, ensuring a warm welcome for all our visitors.
Although we are now welcoming visitors back to the museum and beginning to offer ad-hoc volunteering roles, due to the ongoing situation with Covid-19 we are not in a position to offer all our volunteering opportunities just yet.
If you would like to receive alerts when new volunteering opportunities arise, please sign up to our mailing list – find out more about how to do this in the ‘Get in Touch’ section below.
On-going roles: The museum offers primarily roles that suit people who enjoy working with the public, speak excellent English, offer great customer service skills and can be available on a regular basis, e.g. Welcomer and Family Activity volunteers.
Fixed-term placements: Working 1-2 days a week, volunteers assist staff in the publishing, curatorial, exhibitions, communications or learning teams. These roles often require specific skills and experience and are useful for students and graduates interested in developing a career in museums and cultural attractions, publishing, learning or digital fields. There is no programme or set timetable for these internships; they are advertised when the museum seeks additional support. When a volunteering opportunity arises, it will be posted under 'Current Vacancies'. Alternatively, you can sign up to the mailing list – see ‘Get in Touch’ section below.
Vacancies
Welcomers are the first people visitors meet on arrival at the museum. As members of the Visitor Experience team, you would greet visitors on arrival, listen to their needs, orientate them, answer questions, and help them get the most out of their day.
To apply please complete a Welcomer application form and send to volunteer@designmuseum.org.

The museum recognises that work experience is different from volunteering. The museum is currently focusing on core activities and consequently regrets it does not have the capacity to organise work experience placements, neither for groups nor individuals.
