Cycling tips!

Using a bike is a fantastic way to travel to the museum safely where lockers and a number of parking spaces are provided.

Here is some handy advice to help you enjoy your journey.

Top tips

  • Carry a backpack with a rain jacket or wet weather gear, a hand bike pump, a bottle of water, a puncture repair kit, lights and a bike lock.
  • Look up alternative cycle and public transport routes in case you want an easier trip home.
  • Leave extra time to get to the museum as London traffic can often add unexpected delays to your journey.
  • There are extra bike racks near the museum outside Gails Bakery.
  • There is an independent bike shop that usually has a pump outside if needed, and Decathlon on High Street Kensington for any extras.
  • Always wear your helmet!
  • Despite the weather, try to enjoy it!

Kensington High Street Cycle Lane

The Design Museum celebrates cycling in all its forms and held a major exhibition dedicated to bikes in 2015. The museum is fully supportive of a coherent, safe cycling strategy in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and encourages its visitors to cycle to the museum.

The museum has not seen any review or evidence presented on the efficacy of the Kensington High Street cycle lane, but like many rapid responses to particular circumstances it appears from feedback given by users that it could be improved.

As the museum supports having a cycle lane on the high street, it would welcome the opportunity to facilitate and host the council's plans to improve the design of this scheme and hopefully be a place where stakeholders can come together to review the scheme, articulate how it works within a wider cycling strategy, recommend improvements and implement them.

Santander Cycle Scheme

There are many docking stations around the Design Museum and it is just a short 10 minute ride from the museum district in South Kensington.
