DESIGN MUSEUM ACADEMY Children's workshop

Design Camp for ages 7 to 10: Create in Clay

A day of hands-on exploration for children to experiment with clay, from creating pinch pots to wheel throwing and turning, to crafting tools. They will be introduced to the tactile material of clay and its many properties.

Priority booking for members.

What to expect

In this creative workshop, children will enjoy an immersive pottery experience to learn and explore a wide range of techniques and approaches, inspired by our latest display PLATFORM: Simone Brewster.

Participants will be introduced to sculpting clay using carving tools made from a variety of materials.

The day will begin with a mindful drawing activity to inspire children to generate ideas and connect with the creative process. They will then experiment with different states of clay, from liquid to leather-hard, building an understanding of how the material can be shaped. They will also learn how to prepare the clay to create pinch pots and try a potter’s wheel, developing the skills and confidence to work with clay.

Learning outcomes and takeaways:

  • Mindful drawing experience
  • Collaborative pinch pot challenge (making individual pots to then make up into a whole collaborative piece)
