Workshop: Skatepark Masterplanning
A one-day blast to teach you the essentials behind skateable space design, how skateboarding can be placed in the city and how you could build it.
What to expect
This workshop will feature a roundtable of architectural drawing, spatial design, model-making and co-operative exercises to ‘unlock’ parts of your local environment you think need skateboarding.
Open to all with an interest in the built environment, as well as skateboarders, the session will focus on the architectural importance of the DIY scene, how this led to some London’s best loved skate spots and how it helped evolve skateboarding as we know it.
Discover the essentials of conceiving skateable spaces for your community with practical workshops and maybe imparting the bug to help you go out and build your own!
You’ll draw on experience and technical knowledge from professionals in the skateboarding and public architecture world, giving you the confidence to think of public architecture with a different set of eyes (or limbs!).
PLEASE NOTE:
• The workshop includes a visit to our SKATEBOARD exhibition.
• All equipment and materials will be provided for the duration of the session.
• Light refreshments and equipment will be provided upon arrival.

Facilitators
Bedir Bekar
Bedir is a chartered structural engineer and designer, teaching at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. He is the UK’s foremost skatepark engineer, having built over 25 skateparks, working with community groups and local authorities to oversee the restoration of historic sites such as Stockwell Skatepark, Kennington Bowl and the Hackney Bumps Community project in London, to computationally-driven and technically complex complex technical builds like the Aalto wave for the Nike EHQ skate campus. Tom Critchley
Critchley is a PhD researcher and associate lecturer in the Design Department at Goldsmiths University, London. His research is around skatepark designs and community engagement, where he has also worked for the NGO Concrete Jungle Foundation, co-designing skateparks in Peru, Jamaica and Morocco. He is also one of the stalwarts of South London’s ever growing ‘The Grove’ DIY – one of the few DIY skateparks in London boasting a community garden and providing an arts space.
