Public Programme Talk
On Fashion: Whose Sari Now?
Join us to discuss how the contemporary sari endures as a site of design innovation, self-expression and creativity and explore how a length of folded fabric can unravel complex issues of identity, oppression, resistance, emancipation and autonomy.
Join us for an evening to learn more about the design of the contemporary sari and its cultural and social impact.
A garment with ancient origins in South Asia, the fabric and detail of the sari, as well as the way it is worn, varies according to geography, environment and function.
In the last decade or so, the sari has slipped across boundaries of convention in unexpected ways and is being reimagined by designers, wearers and makers for a diverse, contemporary world. Its evolution is challenging dominant social, economic, political, and cultural narratives and structures providing a rich canvas for creativity.
This performance-led conversation will present the sari, in various guises, as a dynamic source of storytelling.
Join a panel of distinguished contributors unpacking offbeat stories and relationships draped in the sari.
