Design Museum Academy Young People Workshop
Design Camp: Heat-transfer printing for 11 to 14 year olds
Discover how accessories can be created by using leftover materials from previous fashion collections.
You will learn how to use your imagination to create unique, one-off print designs to transform the surface and aesthetic of the given materials whilst reflecting your own personal style and design identity.
You will be introduced to Sadie William’s practice, including highlights from her NEWGEN creative output. Learn how pattern and colour can transform surfaces and gain an understanding of how outfits can be elevated through introducing accessories, such as hair pieces, and how patches and badges can serve to decorate garments or send a message, whilst having the ability to repair damaged garments.
This process is known as heat-transfer printing, or 'Sublimation printing', where designs are transferred onto synthetic fabric fibres through heat using a heat-press heated to 180-200 degrees. You will be adopting your own hand-painted and collaged designs.
This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in fashion design. No experience is necessary. Basic hand-sewing skills are useful but not essential.
The workshop includes a visit to REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion sponsored by Alexander McQueen with Sadie Williams.
All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided for the duration of the session, but you must bring a packed lunch.
A NEWGEN alumna, Williams is a multidisciplinary artist creating pattern and colour-driven work in fashion, textiles and art, juxtaposing graphic modernity with hand-worked craft. For many years she created collections shown at London Fashion Week, though conscious of the unsustainable nature of the fashion calendar, she stepped away from creating seasonal collections in 2018 and is increasingly mindful of sustainable practices including upcycling and repurposing materials.
