Design Camp: Create in Clay for 11 to 14 year olds
After a visit to our Ai Weiwei: Making Sense exhibition, this workshop will take you to an immersive pottery experience to try various techniques and enjoy a day of hands-on exploration of clay, from creating pinch pots to wheel throwing and crafting tools.
Suitable for young people aged 11– 14.
What to expect
This workshop will introduce young people to the concept of repetition and make and break in the clay design process. They will also gain an insight into the clay making process and learn to understand the creative process of collaboration
Starting with the physical process of preparing clay to making pinch pots into functional whistles and having a go on a potter’s wheel, participants will discover the powerful creative experience of making without fear or failure.
What they will learn:
Hand building techniques
Slip decorating
Toll making
How to centre on the potter’s wheel
Please note that all equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided for the duration of the session, but you must bring a packed lunch.
Facilitator
Auriol Herford
Herford created Kite Studios in 2005 with a vision – to offer a creative oasis for all. She teaches adults and children, highly trained artists and people with special needs, at school and in the studio. The process of making is what fascinates Herford, who is driven by finding new ways to enable people of all ages, needs and abilities to come on board and engage in that process with her.
