Design Camp: Code Your Own Adventure for 8 to 11 year olds

In this introductory workshop, participants will learn how to read a video game and design a game where the player can choose what to do.

They will create their own text-based videogame with the coding engine Twine, and how they can give the player the ability to choose their path. Each child will create their own character and give them a mission, building the story and steps into their own video game to keep players hooked.

Attendees will discover the most interesting ways to create a narrative, learn about the history of storytelling, and find out why video games are the biggest revolution in fiction since the invention of the novel.

Learning outcomes:

• Basics of storytelling

• Basic coding concepts and how to apply them to logic problems.

• Visualising storylines and creating mapping frameworks for them

• Critical analysis and constructive feedback

– This workshop is Suitable for children aged 8 – 11

– All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but you’ll need to bring a packed lunch

– Please let us know of any access needs, including neurodiversity, when booking a place for your child. If your child receives additional support in their formal education setting, you are welcome to bring a carer/additional adult at no cost, but we are unable to provide 1:1 support
